Key Capabilities
MRZ (Machine-Readable Zone) parsing
The reader detects the two-line MRZ printed at the bottom of every ICAO-compliant passport and decodes the document number, nationality, date of birth, sex, and expiry date using the official check-digit algorithm. Because the MRZ is a fixed OCR-B font, extraction is far more reliable than reading the free-text visual zone.
Visual inspection zone fallback
When a photo only shows the upper biographic page, the tool falls back to reading the printed name, place of birth, and authority fields. It cross-references these against the MRZ when both are present to flag mismatches that often indicate a poor scan or a tampered document.
On-device processing for sensitive IDs
Passport images are among the most sensitive documents a person owns. Core OCR runs locally in your browser through WebAssembly, and advanced recognition uses a zero-retention API so the image is analysed and immediately discarded, never stored or used for training.
How to Use
Photograph the biographic page flat
Lay the passport open on a dark, non-reflective surface in even light and capture the full page including both MRZ lines at the bottom. Avoid glare from the laminate.
Upload and let the MRZ decode
Drop the image into the tool. It locates the MRZ first, validates each field against its check digit, then reads the visual zone for the remaining details.
Review and export the structured fields
Confirm the parsed name, document number, and expiry, then copy the structured result or download it for your form, CRM, or records.
Common Use Cases
- Hotel and travel desk check-inFront-desk staff photograph a guest passport and auto-fill the registration form with name, nationality, and document number instead of re-typing the MRZ by hand and risking transposition errors.
- KYC onboarding for fintech and travel appsCompliance teams pre-fill identity verification forms from a single passport photo, reducing onboarding drop-off while keeping the raw image off their servers.
- Travel itinerary and visa prepFrequent travellers extract passport numbers and expiry dates to fill in visa applications and online travel authorisations without hunting for the booklet each time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can it read the MRZ (machine-readable zone)?
Yes. DoctorDocs extracts all visible text including the MRZ code lines at the bottom of passport pages. The two-line MRZ contains encoded data including document number, nationality, date of birth, and expiry date in a standardized ICAO 9303 format that our OCR engine parses accurately.
Is my passport data safe?
Absolutely. All processing happens locally in your browser using Tesseract.js WebAssembly. Your passport image containing sensitive biometric and identity data never leaves your device. No passport information is stored, transmitted, or logged at any point.
Who uses this tool professionally?
Immigration consultants extract passport data for visa application forms. Travel agencies digitize client passport details for booking systems. Corporate HR departments process employee passport information for business travel coordination.
What passport formats are supported?
All ICAO-compliant machine-readable passports are supported, including Type P (standard), Type PA (official), and Type PO (diplomatic). The tool handles passports from virtually all countries as the MRZ format is internationally standardized.
